DETAILS
The design objective was to turn this blank slate with an outdated fireplace mantel into a striking feature wall that felt more contemporary while also offering some storage solutions. The ornate mantel was removed and replaced with a custom-designed mantel and an added millwork paneling detail above that adds architectural depth. With built-in wiring for picture lights, and a combination of open and closed storage, this piece brings a lot of quiet and stately personality to this family room.
One of the design challenges stemmed from the lack of symmetry in this room since the fireplace opening is positioned off-center on the wall. The solution was to keep the doors at either side of the fireplace opening as the same size, while adding additional paneling to the longer bookcase.
